Key synch/replacement problems

Hi guys,

The key remote stopped working after a period of storage. The key wouldn't synch, and research suggested that this is the not uncommon key death scenario. The key would still unlock and start the car, but the remote wouldn't work - fine.

Eventually, took the car in to Porsche, purchased a key, and had it programmed, stipulating I would like to retain the use of the original key as a spare - they saw no problem with this.

The result was a working new key, but a totally dead original. The atmosphere was somewhat strange and we were told to come back to have it programmed once the key blade situation was permanently sorted.

Today I went in and was told that as they dropped the old key from the ecu at the time of programming the new key, the original key is now scrap, with no hope of retrieval.

Was there any ecu related reason they couldn't leave the original key as a functioning unit and just add the new key??
