Porsche Boxster 986 Navigation Display Screen PCM

Hello everyone so I see one of these navigation units for sale on this forum , to be honest I didn't know these were an option back in the day . Do cars not originally equipped with the nav unit need extra wiring or software to run the unit ? Or is it basically plug and play ? Can the maps be upgraded ? For those that have this in their cars is it a good unit ? User friendly ? I have the typical windshield suction cup GPS and while it works is not the most attractive setup .

I have the nav system in one of my '99 Boxsters and in my '99 996C4. The problem is, it takes CDs to load maps and Porsche isn't supporting the upgrades. There are (I think, if I remember w/o looking) three different components to the system. It fills three of the four slots, with the heat/AC unit filling the fourth.

They were a terribly expensive option ($3K+) when new, but unfortunately, it's now totally worthless.

I've read that as part of Porsche's "Classic Program", Porsche is bringing out an updated unit for the 986/996 models. I've done a little looking around, but haven't found the new system yet.

But for now, save your money.

Don't bother, the system is so archaic that it is nearly agricultural. Updates are now years old and no new ones are coming.

You may want to upgrade to a double din head unit that supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Much better than factory Nav. Plus, you'll get a nice new modern head unit with BT phone & audio, Sat radio, etc.

That's where I'd put my money (and I recently did).
