would the 987 mirrors directly fit onto the 986?

Do you mean the interior mirror? If so they are the same, part number 996-731-511-00-01c for the standard rear view mirror for 986 or 987.

I think he is talking about the exterior mirrors.

No, unfortunately, as they are far nicer IMHO than the 986 mirrors - different mounting contacts. If they did, I'm sure we could sell a boatload.

Just an FYI, the 987 mirrors (not sure about the 986's) do fold in for long term storage and parking, making the car not so "wide".

986 Mirrors fold as well... I think most Porsche mirrors fold, all the old "flag" style and after sure did.
