Lost my engine today

2001 Boxster. Driving to Okteenerfest Porsche 914 event in NC. Almost there (10 miles out) and heard a rattle. Dash lit up, engine shut down and that was it. Just turned 68,000 miles. Don't know cause of failure yet. I'm suspecting IMS.

Oh well....probably sell as roller and look for a S :)

Ouch. Bad day.

JimmyBad 09-12-2019 06:27 PM

I have an 01 986 too with 116k miles. I think the previous owner changes the IMS bearing but I never checked. Let us know what was the cause if you figure it out.

Or you could pop an S motor in the "roller" you have

Starter986 09-13-2019 04:02 AM

Sorry to hear about the car. That's a huge bummer.

If/when mine goes south... upgrade engine time. I believe if a car otherwise is in great condition mechanically... you're not going to get anything that will be less costly. Further, if the car appearance... the exterior... the interior... the acoutrements... knowbs... handles... buttons... you know, 8-9/10 showroom... just slap in a new engine.

I can hardly wait! ;)

Yes. This. With an emphasis on "roller". ;)

A 2001 base with a bad engine isn't worth much. Probably could break even if you dropped another used engine (with new IMS bearing and RMS) in.

Car is in excellent condition (other than engine). It's been a regional PCA show winner.

Finding a good engine is the challenge. Might be better to take the hit and sell rather than spend money playing Russian roulette with a set engine.

I'm thinking over my options.....

I don’t know...I think I’d just save the $15k, sell the roller and invest the $17k-$18k in a later 987.

Brian in Tucson 09-13-2019 04:54 PM

I wish you were closer, sounds like it would be a good project car. (Which I really don't need.)

mikefocke 09-13-2019 05:10 PM

That assumes that it was assembled correctly, installed correctly. The best of intentions sometimes don't turn out perfection.

I'd never say anything was bullet proof.

+ 1

That is one properly built engine that will keep you smiling for many years :)

That's if you like the look. Personally, I'm not a fan of the side intakes shape of the 987. Something about the smaller side intakes of the 986 I like. So much so that' I've been eyeing that Joe Toth 986 side scoop for a year now. Almost ready to slap one on.

Sorry to hear this. I am on Engine #5.

Buy an eBay replacement engine. Swap it in. You're at break even. Drive it for a year to earn out some of the investment. Then decide if you want a different car.

Yes you're right, nothing is bullet proof. It sounds like BYProdriver knows what he's doing he's been driving a near identical engine he also built for a few years.
