activate ignition key

I have a 'cut' key with chip for my 1999 Boxter. Are there other options besides the dealer for activating the chip?

None, the key carries an RFID chip that must be coded into the immobilizer system for the car to accept the key; that requires a PST II, PIWIS, and the iPass code for the new key.

If you have one working key there are third parties that can clone the "pill" that is in the key. I have done this with 2 boxsters.

Is this true? That's not been my understanding before this.
How do I find someone who'll do this, and what's the savings versus a dealer?
(A key and programming from the dealer here is a $500 nut!)

I would be interested to know too, as I have two extra keys but only one pill

I went to a place in Montreal with my Boxster and my working key. It took about a half hour and I got a second key that starts the car and opens the door mechanically for $172.46 CDN. They cut a new key blade then clone the pill.
I went through the list of local shops that clone keys and found only a couple that could do my 2000 Boxster. I have had them do this for my 2 Boxsters.
I can give you the information on the shop... but as I said they need the car and the key so it won't work by mail!
