Things to check

Hello all,
I am about to remove the interior engine cover since I removed the seats and will remove center console. I figured since I'll be right there, I should check engine compartment. Is there anything specific I should check? Boxster runs with no problems, but I do have whining noise that appears to be going with engine RPMs. If I recall correctly, i have the whining noise ONLY when I accelerate. If I just go on neutral at highway speeds or any other speed, i have no whining noise. If I am parked and raise RPM, I do not get whining noise.

Thanks

Your front engine mount might be bad. Do you get any kind of clunking when you accelerate suddenly or suddenly lift? If there's metal to metal contact you will hear engine noises more clearly.

You may want to remove the serpentine belt and check all the pulleys for any play. ESPECIALLY the water pump. Check for any kind of movement, specifically for front-to-back play. And of course, check the belt itself for cracks in the ribs. they'll be most noticeable on the tensioner pulley.

Thanks for fast responses. Will I see the front engine mount from the interior? I didn't notice any metal to metal noises, but the ride is not comfortable overall and I do hear noises on bumps, but I think its more of suspension (control arms).

You will not see the front engine mount from the interior.
The only way to really see it or check it is to remove it.
If the mount is the original it is most likely shot.

I second that 100%. Mine (02s) had the original mount and the mount fell out of the carrier when I pulled it.

Thanks do you use OEM mount replacement?

I just replaced the center part.
It has to be pressed in so you will need access to a hydraulic press. If you go that route.
The OEM part is the entire mount and is around $175.00 the center part is around $20.00-$40.00
depending on brand. replace the rubber side buffers also. They are around $15.00
If you look at the parts you will see what I am referring to.

I finally got to it and noticed that serpantine belt is in horrible shape. Just by looking at it as running and off, do you see or hear any other issues?

That's pretty much what my belt looked like. It's hard to tell just by looking, so you'd have to take the belt off and check each pulley individually by spinning it with your hand and listening. And try to move them back & forth, front to back with your hand. They shouldn't have any play. Pay special attention to the water pump pulley. Mine had a bit of front-to-back play in it so I'm waiting for parts to replace it.

Remove the serpentine belt and spin the idler and tension pulleys by hand. If they are loose or have a grit-like feel to them, they need to be replaced.

Then do the same for each of the accessory components (alternator, power steering pump, water pump, a/c compressor). They should spin freely, smoothly, and quietly.

Also keep in mind that the whining noise might came from a bad AOS.
But definitely your belt is shot !

Replaced the belt. Tested all components, but did not notice anything out of ordinary. After starting with new belt and cover off, I heard some weird sounds, but not sure from which component. It had kind of humming sound, sometimes louder and sometimes quieter. With engine cover back on, the sound disappeared. I guess I'll drive like that for now and we'll see if there will be any issues in future. Thanks for your help.
