i have a 01 boxster s. i had headers and fabspeed exhaust installed. the installer said the front o2 sensors were to short. no cats so the rear are not used.
can i install the rear sensors in the front?

Their interchangeable, just different length wires. I have headers and have used the rear o2's as primarys with no issues.

I have an 01 non-S. I'm debating what to do with my exhaust, because both cats are bad. If I replace the manifold/pre-cats with headers, deleting those cats, what do I do with the O2 sensors? How will it affect performance if the ECU isn't getting a signal from all of the sensors?

It will go to a default signal that will be overly rich to protect the engine & that will lower the performance & lower gas mileage.

You want the smallest header tube size to minimize low RPM power loss.

There should be bungs on the headers for the first O2 sensors. These are definitely necessary! The absence of post cat sensors however, will not affect performance but you will get a CEL saying your cats are defective.
