Rear axle support for jacking up

Do people use it to jack up the whole rear end? I used to use the mounts on the diagonal braces but mechanic told me that was a no, no. Considering he was the head guy at a dealership for years, he must know something. Funny, 101 says to use those and then a video I watched last night on utube on jacking a 986 showed the same thing. I'm so confused.
Anyways, I bought a new jack and am eager to jack something. Please advise.

You could jack the car from its normal jack points if you need a quick hit.

I jack the rear up by the end of one of the diagonal chassis supports.

DWBOX2000 05-29-2019 06:05 AM

Yeah, I have done the diagonals as well with out a problem. I was just told not to which got me concerned.

I use the jack points but sometimes I want to put stands where the jack points are which causes an issue.

Bentley showed the rear axle support which is dead center. Anyone else use this point.

I'll ask my mechanic again, maybe I misunderstood him.

they do permit the center support in the manual, but I don't care for that. That aluminum brace seems a bit flimsy

I put a hockey on my low profile jack and raise the corner via the LCA. Then I place a jack stand under the factory jacking point and lower onto it.

Just my way as I know for sure the LCA will take the load and fairly accessible on a lowered car. A centre point is pretty hard to reach when lowered

YEah and it's hard to get too without a long jack. The one time I did it I bent some of the sheet metal brace around that end. I always use the chassis diagonal as shown in the 101projects book.

i think the term is 'subframe assembly". it's the big bit that connects the chassis, control arms, diagonals, and the aluminum brace. regardless of which one (left or right) you lift from, the car is rigid enough that the whole back end will come up. then, since you are not using the rear jack points, you can get a jack stand under them to keep things secure.

I just ask my Uncle Martin to levatate it :D

I use a jack point at the rear cross piece for raising the full rear end. I then usually put jack stands under the jack points at the bolt area of the cross braces. Never been an issue at all. I also use the jack points depending on what I need to do. Centerally raising the entire rear end makes life fast and easy when raising the car.

Geez, now that is a reference you don't hear much these days. Mid sixties My Favourite Martian.

I have raised my car many many times using the suspension structure at the rear of the diagonal brace. Then you can slip in the jack stands at the regular jack points.

Thanks guys. Seems like the sub frame assembly is okay.

Tailwind 05-31-2019 04:28 AM

With a low profile jack (or wheels up on 2x4's), the jack can be placed between the front bolts that hold the plate to the subframe cross-member. This facilitates putting the jack stands under the rear lift points.

Put a very thick book between the jack and the car to keep from damaging plate or bolts while jacking up the car, put jack stands in place and get the job done.

Also don't forget to chock the front wheels.

Guys, is it fair to say that either of these locations is fine (circled red + yellow), with a preference for the more forward subframe/crossmember area (circled yellow) highlighted by @Tailwind (and which I believe the Bentley manual suggests as well)?

Yes, the yellow area is the best for balance, but the red spots will also work just fine.

+1, I always use a hockey puck between the car parts and the jack for protection.
