aftermarket hubcaps

plastic crest that is larger then stock, but the price couldn't be beat. My originals looked terrible, and one of the crests fell off. the before and after:
Does this look ok?

An unsolicited tip. Point the bottom of the crest towards the schrader valve.

I like it...but it make me think your sock drawer is very organized.

I bought a set like this as my originals were fit for the bin.

The look great but will start to loose their colour after about 2 years. Mine have done but even then they still look good and for the price you could buy 4 sets for the price of 1 genuine one.

Ill buy more eventually and maybe clear coat them next time.

Good buy but ye defo point them towards the valves

I bought them off ebay, they say made in italy on the back, but im not sure about that. I thought I remembered they were 25 bucks, but they were 50!

the sellers name is contaamcparts and they shipped them right out, 4 days from payment to delivery, even though they said 2 weeks

I bought several sets from a guy in HB, CA. Wasn't until a year later I realized they came with a thin film of plastic protector over the emblem. Grab a little from the edge... peel off. A year later and they looked better than the day I put them on! :o

Makes it quicker to pick up the stem location during competition and concours judges will notice/deduct for this oversight.

White socks in the top drawer and colored socks in bottom.

thought folks would get a kick out of the packaging, says made in italy, comes from china and the label is entertaining to say the least.

I replaced my center caps just like yours that came in a Porsche Tequipment box like this, but I went with a black and silver crest instead of the colored version. They don't have that second ring like the original center caps, but they fit perfect, no gap. I bought them back in 2016 and they are as snug today as they day I bought them and zero fading. Maybe return them and look for Porsche Tequipment center caps. I got them off eBay brand new also and I don't remember the price, but it wasn't bad, pretty sure they were under $100 and I got them from a person selling them and I think he was just looking for a quick sale.

The crest pointing to the tire valve is an old “Porsche” thing... and it shows an eye for detail... probably has something to do with quick location of the valve for whatever reason. It would actually be cool to find out how and why it got started. Other marquee’s probably do something similar.

The Corvette folks are big on that too.

And the Top of the crest points to your locking lug

Coincidentally I fitted 4 new caps yesterday to my freshly refurbished wheels.
Bought them from a company based in China called Rhino Tuning and cost $31 including shipping to the UK. They accept PayPal so no need to worry about credit card details.

They arrived amazingly quickly bearing in mind they came half way round the world.
They're not perfect but look brilliant once on the car.
There's no way I'm paying Porsche prices for 4 pieces of plastic! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1558900850.jpg

jay2015 05-31-2019 07:05 AM

what size caps?

Hi,

I would like to buy the center cap as well, two of the emblem have fallen off. There are multiple sizes 73mm, 75mm, 76mm etc. What size fits the 986 (I have 2003-S).

Thanks in advance,

Jay

Grim1ock77 05-31-2019 08:59 AM

I purchased two sets from RhinoTuning a year ago and got 60mm inside and 77mm outside and they worked great on my 99 (should be the same as yours)

Starter986 05-31-2019 10:12 AM

Thanks for the tip!

I've been looking for a center cap for my 99 Boxster wheels. One of them is damaged.

They're 17" chrome wheels (I know -- controversial -- but that's what the PO ordered I-think from the factory) and difficult to find. I like the colored crest on these better and the price is right so will keep the originals but give these a shot.

They are ok, not as good as OEM but a fraction of the price. They used to be all over ebay a few years ago but Porsche has forced them off. I would give them a 2-3 year lifespan before needing replaced again.

thefunkygibbon 06-01-2019 01:32 PM

can you coat them with something to protect them so they don't go crap within a few years?

particlewave 06-01-2019 01:36 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Mine still look brand new after 6+ years, but they are monochrome. The black paint has not faded or chipped.

thefunkygibbon 06-01-2019 01:58 PM

that looks lovely PW. is that an official one or a knockoff one? i'm assuming official given the quality and how it is not just a flat 'picture'

particlewave 06-01-2019 02:02 PM

No, these are knockoffs. ;)
I think I paid $20 shipped for the set of 4 (eBay) in early 2013.

The quality is quite good. My only complaint is that the details aren't perfect (look at the horse's mane).

thefunkygibbon 06-01-2019 02:24 PM

only someone really anal would care though. you could have a Ferrari horsey in there and i doubt anyone would notice!

They just blindfolded the horse figuring you would be driving too fast and scare the horse and it would jump of the crest. :D

I got the colored knockoffs, looked very good at first but the clearcoat did peel off. Luckily it came off completely and uniformly, so doesn’t look bad; lol! However, the color (specifically the red) has faded so it’s more of a monochrome/silver look. Again, it’s uniform and matching, and actually looks good. Just not how it was when they were new.

I’d imagine putting a high quality UV-resistant clearcoat on them would have made them look like new for longer. No regrets here on mine, though.
