Clearcoat peeling issues

Hello everyone!

Today I was about to wash my car, and while doing it I realized that in the front bumper (and side) the metal coat is peeling off in 2-3 spots. It looks ugly, and I’m really afraid that it will continue?!

I don’t know how it happened, just finished a long and fast trip (where a lot of bugs are being killed on the bumper...) and voila... the peeling..

Any solution is greatly appreciated!

You could probably get these areas spray blended and be good as long as they job is done right.

Repainting the front bumper is easy because it comes off, the fender will cost more since they will have to tape off the car. That said, blending black is easier than other colors. Prices will vary depending on your location and the quality of the shop.

I haven't seen clear coat failure on a 986 before, has yours been parked outside or in a garage? Have you waxed it regularly? Have you ever used a very strong pressure washer on it?

Mine had HORRIBLE clearcoat failure on the rear deck (the part that covers the top when folded) when I bought it. It seems to have spent most of its life in Florida.... probably parked outdoors.

Okay, did you manage to "repair" it or did you buy a new rear deck instead ? I hope the rest of the car was fine

I tried to repair it, only to make it worse. (I'm a mechanic, not a body-man, I guess, haha). I've largely ignored it, since this car's primary purpose is track days (don't tell my wife that!)

I wouldn't try to replace it though; the color would NEVER be correct on a 15 yr old car that's lived a different life than the donor vehicle. MUCH cheaper/ simpler to have a body-shop paint it. (Still may not fade at the same rate as the old paint, but no worse than a replaced part)

YMMV

Thanks, yes ill remove the bumper and give it for painting, either way i wanted to clear the front radiators sometime :)

About the clearcoat issue, idk to be honest, the car was always in a garage, except some days spending in the Island sun with high temps.... But those clearcoat issues seem to have started from small bugs/rocks damaging the bumper and "breaking" the consistent coat - No ?

About the wax, im waxing it sometimes using the Porsche Classic hard wax (https://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod131016/Porsche-Classic-Car-Care---Hard-Wax-250ml/) but not sure if its good..

About the pressure, im afraid that ive been using it a bit closer than i should
