aftermarket muffler drone, returning to stock
Hi Eveyone, lurker with my first thread here... 97 Boxster, 5 speed
Aftermarket exhaust w/equal-length headers, high-flow cats, twin tip muffler. Don't know the mfg, but the quality is decent. However, bad exhaust drone due the muffler design. Would like to return to stock starting with the muffler, have a couple questions... What is the distance inlet to inlet on the stock rear muffler? Trying to gauge if I can fit the stock muffler to the existing setup. For reference, the distance on the aftermarket muffler is approx 28". Lastly, is the 2.7L or 3.2L rear muffler a better choice compared to the 2.5L? From what I've read it appears so, but I'm not understanding why they might be better. Thanks in advance! Loving my Boxster. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1559309846.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1559310175.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1559310260.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1559310333.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1559310418.jpg |
My suggestion is to just go 100% stock. Otherwise you may have issues, if you want more sound (originals from the first gen are lacking in the flat 6 sound department) you could spring for fsbspeed, porsche sport exhaust, or akrapovic.
Just my opinion though. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk |
I just installed a fvd brombacher sound version muffler. No drone 2k rpm its 88db in a closed garage at 4k 99 to 100 ish.
Sounds great. |
Thanks for the feedback! I think I'm somewhere in the middle of both recommends right now.
Plan is to incrementally return to stock, and I'll start with the muffler. So I'm thinking the stock muffler is wider, and that I'll need the stock inlet tubes to mate up with the aftermarket cats. The cats appear to mounted and exit similarly to stock, so it might just work out. Right now, I'm targeting the 2.7L muffler and hanger setup. If it ends up being too quiet, I may add the 'sport exhaust' bypass mod. Main priority at the moment is to loose the drone. |
I have installed muffler inserts into the outlet tips to dramatically reduce drone .

If you have sport cats you might want to keep those, helps the motor breath.

What are muffler inserts?
|
Muffler inserts or exhaust inserts are generally perforated tubes with some type of washer or flange at one end to hold it in place . As an example look up Car Chemistry but there are many brands and styles .

I had one on the 987CS and it sounded great with 0 drone... but sold it, because it didn't fit on the 981CS Note: I actually had the SpeedArt (from the same company that manufactures the FVD) |
+2
FVD Brombacher.
I love mine. Priceless. |

The only issue I see is that you have a lot of rust under there. It is not going to come apart easily. Lots of PB Blaster.... LOTS! |
Yeah I'm thinking he might need new clamps and hardware.

Finally finished the muffler, sorry for the delay.
Decided to use an OE muffler, 2.7L from a '02. Kept the headers and hi-flo cats for now. Required a bit of work the mate with the stock muffler and hardware. Happy with how it turned out. Sound is very good at idle, and with revs. Will report back with road sound and drone (hopefully the lack of). All in, about $250 for the muffler and hardware needed to mount the later hanger system to the '97. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1559255426.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1559255475.jpg |
