Thanks for all the great suggestions. I don't think the scratches go beneath the finish, and I believe the plastic beneath is OK although I won't know for sure until I remove the finish. If it looks fine, couldn't I just leave the bare plastic? Or should I keep it protected with a wrap or paint or something?

You could leave it just plastic, but it looks pretty funky with the soft touch removed...
