Chain rail noise/bleed off
 

My new to me 02 boxster makes a little noise when first started,(chain rattle I think),but if I start it everyday it will not make that noise So I 'am guessing the chain tensioner's are getting weak, I know from the IMSB video's you pull them so I'am thinking about changing them out, My Oil is being sent out to get analyzed but the filter was clean looking only a couple of very small brown chips/slivers but that was it.Not sure if I should bother changing them yet..??

If you have brown chips in your oil its likely your plastic chain guides being worn away

Brainles71,...How about the chain rail tensioner's do they bleed off or are they mechanical ,??

When I got box it was making a shrieking noise when I first started it in the morning. Turned out it was the starter--Bendix drive needed lube and was hanging up on the flex plate (flywheel.) Lubing the drive fixes it, replacing the starter (I had extras) does too.

Brian in Tucson,..it only makes that noise if it sits for a couple days,..if I start it everyday it starts as normal I suppose I don't have a lot of boxster experience listening to how A good solid engine should sound, But NO terrible noises so I trust all is well,..My Oil report came back with no issues at all from Blackstone just a high TBN count of 6.5 but I don't know what that is anyway,But I don't think its bad.. I bet it is simply that your lifters are draining and need to be pumped up with oil. My Boxsters don't do it, but my Mercedes CLK 350 has noisy lifters for a couple of seconds before settling down.

Food for thought. I've always used Mobil 1 0W-40 oil. I decided to try out Mobil 1 5W-40 and got engine clatter at start up. By the end of the week I switched back to to the 0W-40 oil.

well this noise sounds like pulling a chain over a plastic bottle very quickly,.I will try to capture the sound and load it,.,.Thanks !

What happens when they stop coming? I used to have the plastic pieces....then it stopped.

My box has the start up rattles when it sits. I typically do a few false starts to pump the tensioners up. Turn car over but shut off just before it catches. On the third time I start car and I don't get the rattle.
