Trick to cleaning license plate

I didn't have much luck searching Google on tips to cleaning the license plate from exhaust carbon. Granted....99% of the cars on the road don't have a centered exhaust output.

Soaked it in water for an hour while I washed the car, dishwasher detergent (I used Joy), and a steel wool pad. See for yourself!

And yes it's a lot of carbon - it burns oil and I hadn't cleaned it in a very long time.

Before and After

Nice job on getting the plate clean.

Does your car blow a lot of smoke out when you start it after it's been sitting for a bit?

Just burns it as the car runs. It wasn't too bad (1 quart per 5000 miles) until the AOS blew at around 85k miles. Ever since it's been 5+ quarts per 5000 miles. But car still runs great aside from that...now at 115k.

I'd get the AOS replaced asap.

Haha no I did replace the AOS at 85k when it blew. Then again immediately because I thought it was a bad AOS with the oil consumption. It consumed the oil despite 2 new AOS's.

Wax it should only need water next time

you sure you didn't damage motor when AOS blew? that kind of an increase in oil consumption points to much more serious issues.

Hard to say but I did shut it down immediately when it blew. And ran for just a couple seconds at home. I did compression and leak down tests months later and the numbers were fine (don't recall actual numbers).

I don't worry too much about it as I'm not going to do an engine rebuild/repair that costs half or 3/4 of the value of the car.

I seem to recall one of the pros (maybe Jake) mentioning a while back that he was seeing a lot of new stock AOSs crap right out of the box.
