New to me 1998. Are white gauge faces original or aftermarket?

White gauge faces generally designate the S model, but the S model didn't arrive until 2000. Your 1998 would have come with black faced gauges from the factory.

One of my '99s has a white dash. The build sheet shows it as an option.

I have white dials too, it was a custom option.

Post a photo of the option sticker found under the front hood.

How well do you know the history of your car? Replacing the cluster is a common repair and or upgrade. The LCD displays can fail sometimes.

My 2000 base came with those gauges. I think Porsche actually considered them to be silver.

I just checked my option sticker, my dials are white but the code I have is: X71 - Aluminum Look Dials

Looks to me like a common-optioned dealer inventory car unless you can see something I don't.

The gauge faces were options not tied to the "S" model.
X71 = aluminum look dials.
X45 = dials painted interior color.

I don't see anything remarkable in your options list. The gauge faces were probably changed by a previous owner at some point.
