In Michigan as long as you own and insure a vehicle,. That coverage extends to any vehicle that you are test driving looking to buy etc. Once you buy and own the vehicle you need to get it insured. I would take my chances with the law once the insurance issue is resolved.. sounds like you have a solution.

Didn't know that. Wasn't always like that.
I still have a pair of NY plates from my second car that I drove 1970 - 1974.
(My first car was a 1966 912 5speed that had NY plates on it when it was stolen in L.A. in 1969)
