1998 Boxster alarm help needed

bought 98 boxster base and although I have the key fob with guts and a new battery it does not activate alarm, unlock, lock or light up. I can manually undo trunk then lock car and alarm goes off, lock doors with window open and operate inside latch and alarm goes off so it appears that alarm sensors work. Is there a way (without me spending $300 + for a new fob and programming) to see that the system is working but the fob is bad? Can the dealer?
