Suspension Noise
 

Need help/opinions. When the car is cold (1st start in the morning or at lunch)I get a pronounced clunk from the front end when I press the brake pedal. I can hear and feel it in the brake pedal. It only happens when I am backing up not moving forward. Once warmed up or moving at speed it doesn’t happen. What portion of the suspension needs to be looked at/replaced? As always, thanks.

I'd take a look at the front pads. Do they have a lot of slop in them, as they can move around in the caliper front-to-back? If that is the case, there is your problem. Some pads come with shims that fit over the ends of the pads to address this very issue. If they are missing or damaged, you'll hear the pad clunk sometimes. When going forwards, the pads are always against the caliper because the rotation of the rotors pulls the pads forward in the caliper. That is why you would hear it when backing up.

I've heard this from my own pads, what I read confirmed what you said. The pads are shifting forward/backward by just a little.

Thanks guys. Believe it or not I do search the forum but I had no idea that pads could make this much noise which is why I kind of discounted it to begin with. I will take a look at them this weekend. I assume that I just pull the wheel and then try to shift the pads around by hand. Any significant play means this could be the issue. If so, how do i correct it? They still have wear left on them. Thanks again for the responses.
