Costs for new transmission

I just learned that my '00 S needs a new transmission. The indy shop said it would be less expensive to purchase a used transmission and install it rather than a rebuilt unit. They're quoting me about $4500-$5500 for the working using units with about 50k on them.
Has anyone had this type of work done before? Does this cost sound in line?

sounds high for the transmission itself. usually u can find them for about $2500 to $3k. If that includes install, its not hateful but still kinda high.

doing a tranny R&R on a 986 is not a very long process, especially for an experienced shop.

I agree with Oliver. ^^

Should be under $4K installed. $4500 is kind of high and $5500 is highway robbery.

I foolishly assumed this was a manual trans. I have no clue what the autos cost

Good info here for parts. (I still have mine too, if you're looking for a tip)

Sorry, I guess I should have clarified I have a 6 speed manual. The price the shop gave me included install. I can’t remember the break down as I was driving when they called and couldn’t write it down. I think install was around $1000.

Recommend you call G-Box in Erie CO. Why spend that much money only to repeat the whole process again later?

Is yours just 2nd gear or 2nd and reverse? Had my 01 S rebuilt with 2nd and reverse out for about 3k all In by my indie. He is very good with transmissions but many can d it.

ymkmkrz-my problem is in all the gears. It’s been very difficult to shift into any gear while driving and it’s never popped out of gear.

That sounds a bit unusual. Maybe a rebuilt unit would be a better choice. Vertex rebuilds them and you send yours in for a core deposit assuming it’s rebuildable. They rebuild a lot of Porsche stuff, but i can’t personally vouch for the transmissions. They have been in business a very long time.

I put a used 5spd in my car back in 2012 and I think total cost including clutch and a serviceable used flywheel was $3200. Things have changed since then so $4k is probably about right if they do trans/clutch/FW/IMS.

While you are in there...
