Manual frunk release lever repair

My friend has a 99 996 that has the manual trunk release (non-electric) but the pin holding the cable into the lever is gone. The eyelet of the cable is there so it looks like a simple repair. Has anyone tackled this sort of thing? I'm guessing remove the 3 rivets that hold the surround and disassemble?

That wasn't helpful. I've searched thoroughly and 99% are regarding manual release due to battery/electric failure.

BrantyB; I just spend 2 days trying to get into my rear trunk. Both the manual cable and electronic cable had snapped within 2 months of each other. Before I could fix the electronic the manual broke. I guess 19 years and 150K miles have taken their toll. In any event remove the pin, get another and reassemble. Should be easy. However, if you want a challenge try doing it through a 2 inch opening in the trunk wall, in the dark.
