Flashing temp gauge

Last night as I was parking the car, I noticed the little red square at the top of the temp gauge scale was flashing. The temp needle was reading a little over 100, and I had just started the car. Does anyone know what this means.

Low on coolant.

Check the coolant level and top up to full.

Keep an eye on the level over the next few weeks as this is sometimes an early warning that your water pump or coolant tank is starting to leak.

It is also possible that the cap is loose or faulty. Make sure it is not cross threaded and that the P/N ends in '04'

Found this here somewhere.

1. Engine coolant level too low
— light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz)
2. Engine compartment temperature too high
— light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) (engine compartment blower might be faulty)
3. Engine coolant temperature too high
— light is lit; pointer on the right
4. Temperature sensor at water outlet faulty
— light flashes rapidly (1 Hz); pointer on the right

Note
The temperature warning in point three is indicated if the conditions "engine coolant temperature too high" and "engine coolant level too low" are present simultaneously
(1Hz = 1 flash per second. 0.5Hz = 2 seconds per flash

Thanks all. Solved with 1 pint of distilled water. Now I need to check for leaks
