All Good Things End

Hi all:

It's been a 17 run for my 01S, but it's about to come to an end.

My indie found lots a black plastic pieces in the sump last Monday and it looks like the IMS chain rail is failing. The motor has 165K on the clock but its not likely to last much longer. I don't see a total rebuild in the cards given I don't have the option of a DIY job. Nor do I see a RND engine as a financial option either. Even at $8.5K, it would be another #3.5K for an indie to make the swap and I'm just not willing to put $12K into a 17 year old car.

So I've gone over the the dark side and just bought a pristine 99 Jaguar XK8 with 43K miles on it. All for $7.2K in the driveway.

You may see me here in the near future as I try to figure out how to send the 01S on its way for reasonable dollars.

Good luck everyone with their 986s. Hope you cars reach the 165K mark I did and go far beyond.

Best

Thom

I feel your pain. I made it to 144.5K miles before parting with my "Boxster with issues". But I'm still carrying the flag with a 987.1 Cayman.

Just sayin'................

Thom, sorry to hear of this.

As the mileage on an average 986 continues upward, the likelihood of engine failure becomes all too real.

A 100K mile 2001 3.2L used engine can be bought for $3500 + $1500 swap by your local shop and the car could be back on the road for $5K. This would last another 10 years at 5K mi/yr.

Best of luck with the XK8!

Deepest condolences. I recently posted a suggestion that someone should start an "original owners" thread and how these rare individuals deserve kudos...I assume you fell into that category. Again, sorry for your loss, but in tribute I'll go back and read though your previous posts.

Best wishes, and happy motoring.
