how to get 18" rsr-style fuchs on a budget
as the title says, here's a quick how-to to make yourself some rsr-style fuchs on a budget. pretty much a summary of my other thread on the subject.
first, buy these fuchs knock-offs: https://www.canadawheels.ca/replika-wheels/r186/platinum fronts 18x8.5 et59 28 lbs (heavy!) rears 18x10 et50 29 lbs (heavier!) total cost is $685 cdn, which is $525 usd at todays exchange rates. next, use the process outlined here: MagnusWalker911: DIY RIM REFINISHING to summarise: strip - this removes the nasty finish that the rims come with. media blast - this gives the 'frosted' look to the metal. tape - use an outside line that follows the first lip on the outer barrel, and an inside line that follows the bottom of the spokes (or you can tape an inside line that offsets the top of the spoke for a more modern fuchs look). paint satin black. shoot entire wheel in satin clear (otherwise the raw metal will discolour). this work cost me $650 cdn ($200 to strip and blast, $450 to tape and paint). that's $500 usd, and i'm sure you can find someone to do the work for less (i don't live in the epicentre of car culture). that's around $1k all in for new wheels that look old. they should fit without spacers, although rears will be tight depending on what you have for tires, camber, ride height, struts vs coilovers, etc. i'm running 15mm front/7mm rear spacers on mine. pics: wheels on a cayman (not mine) as they come from the factory: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1527609495.jpg wheels after stripping: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1527609573.jpg wheels after media blasting: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1527609697.jpg wheels after tape and paint: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1527609758.jpg alternate paint for moderner look: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1527609801.jpg car before: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1527609876.jpg car after: http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1527609924.jpg |

Nice effort. Not so keen on the look or the fitment personally. Is the rear sitting high as it's not settled back down after jacking up or is it normally that high?

might be post-jacking stance. car is also corner balanced so you won't see nice even fender gaps at all four corners.
rear offset with spacers is -43 with 275 indy 500's; at the track i've run OZ wheels with -40 offset on 275 nt01's for years, so clearances are good with appropriate space between fenders and suspension components. on the front i have a total offset of -34 (et 49 wheels and a 15 mm spacer - there's a mistake in my initial post) with a 245 tire. again, i also run an OZ wheel with total offset of 38 (et53 and 15 mm spacer) and a 245 nitto with no rubbing issues except at full lock. this is 4 mm further out than that so actually fixes the full lock issue while still being within the fender. there's a bit of rubbing on the front of the fender liner as i turn through; this will fix itself, or a may punch out the liner a few mm with a heat gun. |

1. Are center bore Porsche specific or did you have to use centering rings? 2. Do they work with OEM lugs? 3. Will OEM center caps fit? I'm guessing since they were designed with Porsche in mind that the answer is "yes" but you never know. Also, do you have more photos of your car with them on? Thanks. |
hi - haven't tried with centre caps so not sure. will check tonite. the wheels fit no problem, but i have read of folks having problems with earlier versions; ps, i'd bought mine used. i have studs and nuts so can't comment on bolts, but the nuts are the same seating at bolts, and i think bolt length is standard. here is only other pic i have ...
