Boxster Part Trivia

Well, I found an interesting part that I have actually been looking for for a while. This is an actual Porsche part that you may find at your local dealer, but I bet even the techs won't know what exactly it is. From the dust on this one, I don't think that it has ever been on a car.

Soooo, what is it? For extra credit, give the part number.

It would appear to be an engine cover (PN: 986 513 011 01), that someone has cut a giant hole into. ;)
Although, it is missing the latch points for the carpet. Some kind of dealer testing part?

I'm thinking due to the proximity of the cut out, around the TB, that It's some kind of a ram air or scoop opening.

Took a few minutes, but I found it!

rick3000 gets the prize! Yes, that is it. It is not listed as a Boxster part per se, but rather a tool. It is basically just a Boxster engine cover without the heat shield, etc., with a large opening and two flexible flaps screwed on. It allows you to use a pressure washer and see what you are doing without getting water into the car. A great idea IMO! I will see how useful it actually is. This one had sat in the tool room unused of a local dealer (since closed down) probably since the 986 came out.

Here is the bottom:

Maybe now Woody can have a use for the pile of Boxster engine covers he no doubt has. :)

Very cool :)

The most interesting part (pardon the pun) of this item is that Porsche created such a thing and actually thought it useful enough to assign a p/n....not that it isn't/wouldn't be useful, but boy is it pretty specific and limited in use. Kind of makes you wonder what other bizarre items are lurking in the p/n list, or items that may have been assigned an actual p/n by Porsche but were never listed.

It's not a "part" it's a special tool ... all of which are pretty bizarre.

Really interesting and kind of bizarre at the same time!

Geof3 03-02-2018 10:05 PM

:confused:I'm trying to picture actually using that "tool"...

Me too. It doesn't seem like it would really give you much access.

Toppy986 03-03-2018 07:10 PM

no doubt every dealer received this expensive tool under the essential tool program from Porsche, only to put it on a shelf.

if anyone is into collecting odd Porsche bits and wants one of these, just stumbled across one on ebay...
