Trans oil - hope I ordered correctly - please verify
Decided to change the trans oil while the 986 is on the Quickjack with the rear bumper and wheels off (still killing time waiting for the Brombacher). Spent the last 3hrs scouring the web for info on the 6spd drain/fill locations and the how-to for drilling the access hole in the pan. I think I have it all straight but I just want to confirm the I ordered the correct trans oil:
According to the Sunset site, original part number 999.917.546.00 was replaced by 000.043.305.49. 000.043.305.49 is listed on Sunset as ‘Genuine Porsche’ but no indication that it is a Shell product. This is what I ordered. I also found the Mobil PTX but did not order it as some posts indicate it is for the PDK cars - 000.043.204.20 MOBILUBE PTX 75W 90 (000-043-204-20-SP) and it is not listed as ‘Genuine Porsche’. Did I order correctly for my 2004 986s 6spd?? Thnx in advance for your replies :) |
000.043.305.49.is the p/n I was supplied by the dealer for my 2000 Boxster S. I nearly needed a loan to purchase 3 litres.

As you mentioned you did some research on Drain (drilling hole in plate brace) and fill plug.
This may be repetition, Loosen fill plug before draining. Did you buy a pump to get fluid out of containers? |

I just geeked out about gear oil specs etc for awhile, and I don't pretend to be even kindof an expert, but after reading some good reviews for the Liqui-Moly GL5 75w-90 synthetic stuff Pelican sells, and coming across a post on rennlist that listed these specs for various oils (copy/paste from Bill 993):

Based on my research the Porsche oil is the only one that eliminates the cold shift issues. Some of the other oils aren't cheap either. Spend the big $$$ once and be done with it. As soon as spring arrives I'll pump in the Porsche stuff and know for sure. I'm running Royal Purple right now.

Honestly I'm more curious than anything else - it's not so much the money. I might buy the Lubri-Moly and the Porsche stuff and try both, for science. I'm sure there's more to oil than these specs (friction modifiers etc - I don't know what I'm talking about), but I haven't seen enough info on the Lubri-Moly stuff on the lists I'm seeing and I wanna know, since the specs I'm looking at look pretty close to Porsche spec.

My independent mechanic suggested that I use the OEM Porsche transaxle oil...
He said that another Boxster owner was reporting cold condition hard shifting and he used the OEM transaxle oil to correct the symptoms. I was experiencing that same symptom for the 2 to 3 shift when the transmission was cold.
I bought the OEM oil from Sunset about a month ago. PN 000-043-305-49 (~$28/liter). I bought 3 liters and the mechanic installed all of that to fill it, with very little to spare. Mine is an '00 S six speed. He removed the diagonal brace to access the drain and fill holes. I read that compromising the diagonal with an access hole could weaken it and impact handling. I'm just looking up spec sheets on the web - I don't have any special sources. The spec sheet for that oil you just mentioned says:
Viscosity at 104F: 76.0 Viscosity at 212F: 15.4 Viscosity index: 211 Thanks for mentioning this - that actually looks even closer to Porsche Spec than the Lubri-Moly GL-5... but it's GL-4, not GL-5, which many people on the web claim is a good thing in these transmissions because apparently GL-5 can wear copper bits, and our transmissions have those? Have you used the Motorcraft Synthetic 75w-90? I'm sure there are other specs that are also important and I know very little about oil. |
The Motorcraft lube is coursing thru the veins of my CSS. On day 3 of my Indy DE last Aug, I started to have issues with the 3-2 downshift. It could be crunchy at times. It was my original trans fluid. Got home and started researching the flushing process and fluid options. Heard the Motorcraft was good, so I tried it. Fixed the crunchy downshift, but is a bit stiff until warm on winter days.
My CSS had 53K mi when I did the change, including 4-5 DE weekends per yr over 5 yrs. The viscosity of what came out was extremely thin, even compared to what was going back in. |
