Transmission Knock
 

Hi all:

My 6 speed 01S has 160K miles on it. The transmission seems to work perfectly. It shifts smoothly, etc. The clutch was replaced at 125K.

Today, when I drove the car into the indie shop, the folks though they heard a rattle noise from the rear perhaps related to the exhaust. The shop put the car up on a lift and the noise seemed be coming from the transmission. The noise goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed and returns when the clutch engages.

Any ideas as to what might be going on?

Does this mean that there is something mechanically wrong that needs repair. Or does this mean that the transmission is becoming noisy as it ages? If it's simply aging, should one use a different transmission fluid to extend the life as long as possible

FWIW: I did not replace the dual mass flywheel when I replaced the clutch at 125K or roughly 40K ago.

it means you need a new flywheel.......

Well thats a bummer....

Pelican parts shows LUK is a Porsche OEM supplier. The LUK flywheel is about 1/2 the price of the 'genuine' Porsche one. Are they the same parts with different branding. Should I steer away from the LUK unit. Willing to spend the money if the Porsche part is actually better

May not make any difference to your long term solution, but this could be a bad pilot bearing. Either way tranny has to come off.

Failing transmissions make whining noises, grind when shifting, jump out of gear, are hard or impossible to get into gear, but they don't make the noises you describe.

It seems like there are some mechanical problem or it may be due to some damage in the parts, you better check this with mechanic so that you don't face the problem again.
