gear shift not centralising

Hi I have a 6 speed box
my gear shift does not centralise very well. For example when changing from 5th to 4th I feel I am almost guessing where 4th is as it does not seem to stop over 4th position. Also it is a bit stiff when moving stick side to side.
Is it ok to remove the cable ends from gearbox to see if it is still stiff, I guess I can just plug them back on after trying the movement. Their are no joints on the six speed box lever to lubricate, not like the 5 speed, but is their something I should be trying/lubricating. Thanks

They are adjustable under the shifter, but you will need a factory neutral alignment tool, which only cost a pound or two.
