Coolant system problems

My 2001 Boxster base has coolant problems.

It was leaking coolent out of the overflow hose, and into the trunk. Got the leaky coolant tank replaced with a new one, replaced the hoses, and topped off the coolant. I have not bled the system tho, maybe this weekend. The engine vent hose which is supposed to have a quick connector, had a broken one. I found out that an air hose quick connect from harbor freight replaces the plastic porsche part quite nicely & doesn't break or leak.

While it was leaking coolant, I overheated it twice. Seem to have dodged the bullet and not destroyed the motor. But it still tends to spew coolant out the overflow.

Something's not right and I can't read enough detail from the various diagrams to figure it out. The overflow goes thru the rear firewall and empties out onto the pavement. Is this correct? I'm thinking of adding a second reservoir to catch the escaping coolant.

I'm nervous about taking the car very far from home.
