One tail light on, with running lights?

I have seen a few other 986's that have the same issue as I have.
When the car is running without the headlights switched off.
The right tail light has one bulb running.
Sometimes I get both working. But mostĺy I get only the right light.
I have to move the headlight switch one stop to the right to illuminate both tail lights so it doesn't look stupid.

I have changed the entire assembly and got the same result.

What is going on?
How is this fixed?

Fuzzuki: are you pulling the headlight switch OUT? Doing so one click turns on your fog lights, and doing so two clicks turns on the rear fog light, which illuminates on one side only (the left, I think).

No, when the switch is in the off position, not pulled. I get a right tail light.
If I move the switch one click to the right, they both come on.

Why would they make only one side come on?

A 986 had Day Light Running Lights? Or does "DRL module" mean something else??

He is in GTA, which I take to mean Greater Toronto Area. I.e. Canada. Canadian Boxsters had DRLs. The module is with the rest of the relays in the driver's footwell. If you pull it out, the problem will go away, but you will no longer have DRLs and the low beams won't stay on when you put on the high beams. It's also possibly illegal.

I’ve been running without a DRL module for a few years now. One side effect, at least for my car is the rear plate lights don’t work with the module removed.

It’s one of the two double wides. One is the top relay, the other is the DRL. Take one out, and if your top still works, you got it. Otherwise it’s the other.

You know that your light switch has two positions to the left of off and two positions to the right of off.
The two left positions are “city lights” and illuminate front park and tail on one side only.

Of course the two to the right are both parks and both tails and the next click is headlights.

Just about every 986 has required a new headlight switch or will shortly, as they appear to have a limited life!
