Ims or???
Background. Prior to leaving for an extended period of time due to my occupation, I had symptoms of a worn clutch. In a flurry of activity, before leaving, I commenced the teardown, found the Bendix drive chewed up and the ring gear on the flywheel destroyed. I replaced the flywheel, clutch, associated parts, starter, two cv boots, DT40 and new oil filter. buttoned everything back together, quick drive and was welcomed with loss of power, flashing cel, pulled codes for misfire and misfire on cylinger 1, 2, and 5. Unfortunately, I left the next day. Fast forward 7 months later, dead battery, replaced battery, started right up, no cel, no codes, didn't feel right, shut down, drained oil, pulled filter, cut filter, metal particulate in filter, dropped oil pan, feared IMS failure, but, I found a bunch of metal shavings, some plastic, black rubber, and what appears to be several small chewed up springs. Please see pictures. Thoughts appreciated, pulling the trigger on replacing IMS bearing at a minimum and probably chain guides. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1506567212.jpg

Sorry to see this. Complete teardown. That is a ton of debris and now its in every oil passage and between every machined surface.

does it looks like a chain tensioner pieces?
|
Holy crap:eek: noisy before that?
|
Amazingly, not noisy before this at all.

Before i pulled the pan, I had 2 high end HEPA air filter screens sitting over the bucket, removed the IMS Guardian jr. plug, and had the oil drain through the 2 filters. When complete, there was nothing on the filters, no particulate, pieces, anything...

Made the decision to pull the current engine out and replace with a decent donor engine. A rebuild will be attempted with the engine that has suffered what I do believe is thrust bearing failure, won’t know for sure until it’s been torn down to parade rest. So, I’ve removed all the braces, exhaust, transmission, all while dealing with late hours on a ship that’s having engine issues of its own. Tonight’s work on the box? Draining coolant and removing connections from the trunk! Pics may or may not follow of this project, maybe one of my 7 year old wearing earmuffs since I’ve been loose with the harsh language.
