Axle boot clamp question
 

Outer axle boots are leaking, but there are no cracks. They are leaking out from underneath the clamps. Looks like the boot have been replaced in they didnt use the correct tool for the type of clamp used. Anyone have advice on my options for replacing them. I assume there is a special tool for the clamps in the picture I attached. Any guidance would be appreciated. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1505012586.jpg

Or you can go to your local auto parts store as many carry the Lisle tool to clamp them but it is around $30. As far as taking the axle out, it's easy. Clean it up and regrease it before you put it back on. If you've never taken a CV apart watch it on youtube and hopefully one of the videos where someone uses a hard plastic or brass mallet to not damage it with a regular hammer.

Clean the area to see what the problem is, compare to opposite side if needed. If it's oem style clamp you may be able to grip end with needlenose plier & refasten. I have bought replacement clamps before.

I generally use a pair of end cutters to tighten the oem (oeteker) style clamps. Buy a few clamps in case you muff one. If your only problem is a leaking boot, I don't see why you would go to all the trouble of removing the axle. Just clean it up and replace the clamp. Keep an eye on it afterwards.

I ordered some new clamps and a crimp tool. Plan to clean, wipe out some of the old moly lube and re-lube. No plans to remove axle. After I posted this I found several write up / DYI's. Should have searched first, but I had no idea this was so common a problem.

Here is what I used on my 2002 base : Cv boot clamp

Took 15 minutes to install ....fits perfectly in the groove... Oh can be re-used if you wish....

Dont overtight...... just up to the point where you cannot twist the boot anymore.

These are for the larger set. I dont remembrer the size for the smallest one.

Even if the worm is pretty small and certainly have no effect on the shaft balance .. I set them 180 deg apart.
