Cigarette lighter not working
It's a 2000 base 986.
The light around the lighter works fine. Checked with a volt meter, no power to the lighter. All the fuses are fine. What do I check now? |
What if you test again but with the ignition switch to on?
May be previous owner want it powered only when ignition is on ? Just throwing idea here... |
Think I did, but I will try once again.
|
nope. nothing
|
I hope this tread keeps going with more potential fixes. My 99 base has the same problem; good fuse, zero volts. Checked voltage with the car off, in accessory and running. Zip, nada, nothing...
|
Make sure you check fuse D5 not only visually but also with an ohm meter.

Check with a volt meter do you have voltage on each side of the fuse holder? |
When you say that the lighter is not working, do you mean you can't light a cigarette with it or that when you plug something in to it (a USB adapter, say) you don't get power?
If the former it could be a bad resistance element in the lighter. Parts stores sell repalcement elements, or you can buy an entirely new one from a dealer If the latter, make sure the device you're trying to power works by plugging it in at another car, and then try a voltmeter to see if you're getting 12 volts power from the contact and ground. If not, you have some detective work to do on the wiring |
Sorry, I will try to be clearer with my issue. I pulled the lighter out of the dash, still connected, check power at the terminals to the lighter itself. No power. Fuse 5 good. I'm sure it is something simple, however, electrical is not my forte.

The cars delivered in Australia have been set up so lighter only works with ignition on, I think its a safety idea.
Anyone know how to reverse this condition? |
The fuse was blown, put a new one, and still the same thing.
|
OK, I did a voltmeter test and had 12.45 volts going to the lighter.
Tried a phone charger in there and it light up. Although it doesn't fit very well and keeps wanting to fall out???? Are these smaller than normal lighters???? I guess my lighter is broken. Will I have to buy one from Porsche? |
Watch this instructive video.
It made me laugh several times. Now I know how to replace the lighter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp-O-posC2I |
There were two sizes of lighter sockets used and I recall having an adapter that was necessary to keep my Porsche battery charger in the socket. A little red plastic ring that fit around the portion of the charger that went furthest into the socket. ROW versus US? Model year dependent? I don't know. OTOH the GPS I had fit just fine.
