Strange Squeal from engine

Had it diagnosed at my favorite shop (very reputable). They said it is not the belt as suspected. The belt tension is fine. Thet did the 60k maint a few months ago at 56,000 . Had it done early because I tend to forget these things, and I had the money. :) They said the noise is coming from the a/c compressor pully, and it would cost about $1700 for the repair parts and labor. With the help of a knowledgable friend we opened the top engine compartment and suspect it might be something else. Used a rigged listening device to listen to the a/c while running. The noise seems to be coming from the front right section if the compartment, not the a/c compressor which is on the left side (driver side). Any ideas???

Also noticed that the air hose pictured below would collapse when ignition is switched on and go back to normal shape when turned off. Is this hose maybe somehow related to the squeal or is it another problem??

The hose is not an air hose is oil delivery and should not collapse that way...my recommendaion is to have it replaced, porsche updated that particular hose in 2001 making it stronger and the inlet that goes in the engine deeper to avoid any possible leaks. One question regarding the noise, is it a constant sqeal ( which may indicate belt ) or is it intermittent, does it squeak faster/louder as you accelerate, if you stand by the rear wheel on the passenger side with the car on idle, does the sound feels like it's coming out of the engine block? If the answer to these questions is yes, you may be looking at the ugly end of a flywheel problem.....Have the car lifted and inspected from underneath while the squeak is happening, that should tell you better....God luck..

Don't drive it until you fix it because this can damage the engine permanently.

The oil separator has failed. You need to replace it and the oil filler tube. When the separator fails, it pulls a huge vacuum from the oil filler tube and causes it to collapse. After the tube collapses several times it weakens and can crack. There is normally a vacuum on the oil filler tube, but not so strong it collapses, so you don't want any cracks or holes in that tube if it has weakened.

This same thing happened to mine last winter and it has been great since the fix.

Thanks for the input

Well as it turns out... The collapsed oil line was a recall from 2000. The line was found to be defective and should have been replaced a long time ago. The collapsed line caused the oil seperator to fail. All of the weird noises where directly caused by this failure. Its running like a champ again....

My friendly repair shop did an awesome job fixing it. They replaced the line and the oil seperator. $340 including labor.. I couldnt be happier. The thought of a possible a/c replacement or even a flywheel as suggested was pretty scary.

I'd say it worked out pretty well. I hate to think what a Dealer would have charged me or what they would have tried to replace.
