Next problem valve stem caps 🙄
Previous owner installed those cool Porsche valve stem covers and surprise, the back two are frozen on. From everything I can tell the valve stems on an 03 do not have TPMS stems (I hope)
Am I right on this? Nothing in the owners manual about them being anything more tha just rubber valve stems. Thanks in advance. |
Correct, no TPMS.

If your car is a daily driver or lives outside, I have found this will happen. Happened to my touareg.

And now you know yet another use for anti seize compound.....................

'Those cool valve stem covers' isn't very clear to me what you're talking about. If you are talking about aftermarket aluminum valve stem covers on brass valve stem threads, then yeah, I could easily see those corroding when exposed to wet weather/elements.
The "tecquipment" colored-crest valve stem covers I have are actually made of plastic. They have very thin, electroplated metal on the outer visible surfaces. Nice and lightweight that way, and probably won't corrode on brass valve stems like, say, aluminum valve stem caps would. I'm actually not crazy about how they look, but I'm not sure I've found anything that's better, except for maybe just plain black plastic valve stem caps (for a lower-bling factor option.) Brass valve stem caps wouldn't corrode to the brass valve stem thread, but are way heavier than either aluminum or plastic. |
I was joking about them being cool. The previous owner must of thought they were. I learned a long time ago that they end up getting stuck on the valve stems if you don't keep them lubed. They are metal on rubber stems. I wish they were plastic. Got 3 of them off so far.

Are those aluminum, or brass?
Here's the style that my boxster came with. Suspect they are tecquipment, and pretty sure they are chrome-plated plastic. They are lighter weight than any real (solid) metal valve stem cap. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1493784165.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1493784179.jpg My main complaint is that they way they install, they don't thread on very far, so they end up kind of sticking out. I ended up buying a few aftermarket metal ones to try, not sure I liked any better than plain cheap, black plastic. The brass ones (on the right) fit well, but were *really* heavy. (Seem to have no place on a German sports car IMO.) The aluminum ones (on the left) were heavier than plastic, lighter than brass, needed trimming to fit nicely, and would probably corrode (although I like jfp's suggestion of anti-seize... not sure why I never thought of using it on valve stem caps before!) http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1493784658.jpg |
