Porsche

What do you think now

Fintro11 04-24-2017 09:30 PM

Started with a 944 found my boxster, found my parents a boxster. My brother bought a 928 and I just found a cayenne for my grandparents. Porsche family now!

Boxtaboy 04-25-2017 02:50 AM

I like the brand a lot, but it's not a bucket list brand for me (that would be Ferrari). I started with a 944 and still have my Boxster. Want to own a 991 cab in manual one day along with a Fcar.

alex.rhodes 04-25-2017 02:52 AM

I also started with a 944. I got a 1985.5 in 2003. Had to part with it because of moving with the military. Picked up my 986 last august and picked up my 957 in march. The 957 is to tow the 986 during my next move. 3 of my kids are planning their first Porsche when they go of on their own.

To be honest, I didn't buy the brand, I bought the car.

I test drove a Boxster and fell in love. The jury is still out on the brand; premium for sure, reliability, loyalty to it's owners? hmmm, I don't have enough experience yet to make a judgement.

I didn't see that option on your poll. ;-)

DWBOX2000 04-25-2017 03:41 AM

In 2000, Bought a 77 911 Carrera 3.0 and sold for family reasons. Bought 986 S 2.5 in 2015. Enjoy but college looming so who knows what will happen. Just a car so no biggie if I need to sell, though hate to buy another one in 10 years when the prices have tripled. 😄

Nevergrowup 04-25-2017 03:51 AM

For me it was a bucket list brand, and an impact bumper 911 at that. But I too started with a 944 before the 911SC which I sold profitably and got the 986 last fall.

So, now I'm a die hard? :-)

Oldcarguy 04-25-2017 04:02 AM

Throughout my life, I've owned 7 Porsches (out of 20+ cars total) including my current 986. Every time, I was buying the car for its capabilities, not the brand, nor anything to do with perceived status (I couldn't care less). Driven a bunch of '911's but never owned one. Great cars, but for some reason they just don't connect with me. Really enjoying my 986, although I do regret selling my 2005 XKR. That supercharged 4.2L V8 rocked.

I do tend to search out cars that are unique in some way (the 550 Anniversary, my XKR with the rare 'competition' suspension option, etc), but only because they call out to me personally.

I bought mine because I thought they were the best of the best and soon realized they were like any other car sure it's a nice car but when they break it's a fortune to fix.

You expected a Porsche to be cheap to fix? :)

A 77 Carrera 3.0 would be nice to still have especially with what the values are now. I feel that way about the 964 and 78 SC that I had.

I agree totally. I started out looking for a 240SX or RX-7 ! I test drove many cars, and fell in love with the Boxster driving dynamics. I don't care about status, or what other people think about it. So far I don't know or another car that suites my needs better for the price.

BTW, I don't think they are more expensive than other "premium" brands like BMW or Mercedes.

thstone 04-25-2017 09:16 AM

I'd addicted.

But each Porsche that I buy is older than the previous one (rather than newer). Going backward from the 78 911SC to early 911's is VERY costly so I think that I'll skip the early 911's and go straight to a 356C...

Quadcammer 04-25-2017 10:05 AM

couldn't answer the poll as none of the options fit.

I find the brand's vehicles to be fine, but its attitude, advertising, and parts pricing to be asinine and pathetic.

I own three of them (all used), but I don't consider myself loyal to the brand.

Perfectlap 04-25-2017 11:15 AM

I always wanted a vintage Carrera. In the early 2000s you couldn't give the old rust buckets away. Then I drove the Boxster S and said this is the perfect roadster. That it was a Porsche too was a bit coincidental. I'd gotten so used to seeing and driving Porsches at my local autocross venue and those owned by friends that I thought they were pretty common... kind of well... meh. I think its more that there really aren't a lot of good alternatives if you like mid engine. Pretty much why I never owned a BMW or domestic.

Frank N 04-25-2017 11:27 AM

I'd prefer a Ferrari....but thoroughly enjoy this 986 Porsche.

And i would buy another in a heartbeat.

rexcramer 04-25-2017 05:27 PM

I have wanted a Porsche since my dad came home with a 914 sales brochure in 1969.

RobertF 04-25-2017 07:40 PM

I'd always wished I could own one, recently realized I could.
Last week, bought my '03 Boxster Base.

So, bucket list, or diehard?

DaveNW 04-25-2017 08:35 PM

For me, a two-seat roadster was something I'd always wanted. I've owned a few lesser models over the years, the most notable of which was a Miata, (meh...), but none of them were what I'd consider a smile-provoking sports car. When I found my Boxster, it spoke to me, and reeled me in like a fish on a line. There has been no looking back. I have a relationship with this car somewhere well past "like" and just short of "needing therapy." ;)

As to the Porsche brand, while I like the idea of them, and appreciate their looks, I'm not in a mad rush to own more of them. Maybe someday, but for now, this one is just fine, thanks.

I also own a BMW 335 and a Ford SUV as daily drivers, so the Porsche gets the attention it deserves when I have time to really appreciate every inch of its remarkable frame.

So the poll is limited. I did my best. ;)

Not enough choices, so I can't vote! :D

I'm not a die hard Porsche fan, but I do really, really like mine.
I'm not nearly old enough for a bucket list either. :p

I was looking for a sports car and this one just fit the bill far better than any other at the time. Still love it! :)
