Name this oil leak

So I bought a leaking '01 S with the PO diagnosis that it was a RMS. That's a pretty fair bet most of the time with oil in the ground from the center of the car, right where engine and trans meet. But the right rear wheel seemed to have a lot of oil on it also... Today I got the car in the air and this is what I found. Could the AOS be bad also or is this just the AOS? I'm pulling the trans and doing IMS and RMS regardless, but looks like I might need to do some work up top also.

Cool!! I love these posts. My WAG is actually something you may like better......Leaking oil fill tube. What do I win?

I will add there have no classic AOS symptoms (crop dusting from the exhaust) and the car runs fine.

Aside from the AOS being bad, one of the tubes connected to it might not be fully seated. That way, you get the mess, but not the classic AOS symptoms.

CBR:
Perhaps be a good idea to first clean everything before you remove the transmission just to confirm the source of the oil leak, this also would make the gearbox removal process much more pleasant IMHO…
Good luck!

Captain Underwood, is that you?? :D

I'd clean up all around first. As noted, trans pull will be easier and cleaner.

Cleanup is a given folks, I don't like getting any dirtier than needed. I'm a fan of Total Cycle Cleaner for messes like this. I've gotten a good look at the AOS and it is clean and looks new. So the mystery continues...

which kind of scissor lift do you have?
It seems that the height is more than a adequate, it is pretty stable?

It is a Mohawk and very stable. Done many engine R&R operations with it on 911's of all sorts and a few with 987 platform. This is the first 986

It's motor oil. I'll take a look at the oil filler tube when I remove the top engine cover shortly.

Thanks CBR!

I am considering a lift because going through the lengthy process to get the car on jack stands (properly and safely) its getting old.

Perhaps I am the one getting old..

I think it is us. I can get the car on the lower heights of the jackstands with only 2 lifts of the jack (and with 3 lifts I can go higher), but yet I am tired of all the getting up and down off the hard garage floor to make sure everything is lined up and am day dreaming about a lift as well...

And oil fill tube! I am not familiar with that one, so I'll have to look for all the parts and order accordingly.
