2000 S w/ tag on engine
 

Hey all,

New to Porsche ownership but longtime lurker. Finally picked up a 986 S a few days ago. Did some maintenance today. Removed engine cover & saw this tag. Initially i thought engine replacement. What do you guys think? Will call dealership tomorrow regarding specifics on work/maintenance history.

I'd look underneath and try to look where the engine and transmission meet. If one is dirtier than the other, you might have a replacement.

32000 miles would be my guess

That looks like a used engine to me, from what the sticker says.

3.2 M/T = manual Trans.

Def. looks like a replacement engine tag. How many miles show on the odometer? Less or more than 32k.

I've never seen an engine tag attached to a hose and not a hard part of the engine. No yard I ever heard of does that as they usually sell you a long block and keep all the other pieces and most people swap all their intake and electronics onto the supplied engine to make sure there are no compatibility issues with any sensor or the like.

I sourced a used engine for my 2003 986S from a scrapper and it came with most of the peripherals still attached. Those that were not present (starter motor, exhaust manifolds, alternator) or damaged (wiring harness) were drawn out points of contention. Ultimately resolved, with some prolonged hassle

So I wonder what the odometer says, wonder what the chassis miles actually are (Carfax?), what the car was advertised as having? Would smog test records show what the VIN had been doing in its life?

I might be having a serious discussion based on those answers especially with the seller if it is a dealer.

OTOH, nothing wrong with a 32k miles 3.2 engine out of a wreck. But if it was rebuilt for some reason then not knowing why could lead to uncertainty as to the condition of the engine.

That tag says replacement motor to me.

First off i got this 986 from a dealer auction. California car. Odometer is currently at 100,130 miles & correlates correctly with the dates/last service history. Carfax shows nothing on a engine replacement. Contacted 2 Porsche dealers from the service history. One dealer mentioned a leaking headgasket at around 60k miles. I assume the engine was replaced at around this time. I managed to get a hold of the original owner(1 owner car is always a plus) & had a brief talk but caught her at a bad time. Patiently waiting & hoping for her return call.

So i can assume 70k miles total. I preferred the MY2000 for a higher chance of a dual row IMS. The replacement engine possibly being a 01+ concerns me now. Will still upgrade IMS regardless w/ clutch job near future. I need the peace of mine. Always been a paranoid car owner.

So far it's been a joy. Everything has held up well. Engine pulls smoothly, very quiet at low revs but above 4K that porsche flat six note is amazing. Steering is crisp with plenty of feedback, suspension is firm but dampens comfortably over road surface irregularities. Great cars.

If you get the engine numbers off the sump rail area, you can look up exactly what year it is from.

And a 2000 or 2001 are totally crapshoot for which style bearing is in the engine, requiring you to take it apart and look at the IMS flange to determine what it is. We have seen early 2000 engine's with single row bearings, and late 2001's with dual rows, so you can never be sure.

From what I searched Y indicates it's still a 2000 engine.
