Lazy trunk release

So my rear trunk decided not to open today. I heard a soft sound when I pressed the button but no success. I pulled off the left half of my bumper cover and found the manual cable and pop, it opened. Testing the mechanism with the trunk open and the cover off, I found that the latch moved but not enough, apparently, to open the lid. I shot some lithium grease onto the mechanism but I am looking for the cause of this. I'll check out the PET diagrams but thought I might ask here in case any of the local DIYers have come across this.

That actuator looks nicely tucked under a metal plate. I read somewhere that it is friction fit in place. Can anyone confirm this with regards to painless replacement?
