I've already tackled most of the items on your list for 1/4 of the price you paid. Chalk it up to life's lessons.

this advice makes sense if you have already have the space, tools and the cost of your free time is below the shop's hourly rate. All those things cost $$$$ to posses. And after having spent over $30k in running costs over the course of 13 years (not terrible I suppose) I find that labor is very rarely more than 1/3 of the repair bill. The costs of mass produced car parts do not scale down over time, only the resale value of mass produced cars.
