Transmission swap
Could I swap a 03 boxster base 2.7 transmission to a 04 Boxster S 3.2?
Thanks |
Not without effort. The six speed gear box uses different axles than the five speed.

You need from what I have read: clutch (pressure plate maybe?) (400$?) slave cylinder (150$?) axles (900$ new woah! 100$ used) transmission(400+ or audi unit or passat unit) shifter carbles (500 new or 100+ used) rear uprights($$$no idea) possible? yes. Maybe you can make some money back by selling the 6 speed. |
instead of rear uprights all you need are the rear hubs (axles different diameter). when you get the 5-speed just make sure you get the shift cables, slave cyl, axles, hubs and mounting brackets with it. presume you would be doing clutch and pressure plate regardless of what transmission. probably rear wheel bearings too when you change the hubs.

I forgot to mention that is a tip tranny, so I will need all that parts to do the swap? I am not a mechanic, somebody is helping out that is a regular mechanic. I am not looking to do an improvement, is just that I have the two boxsters and the 04 is the spyder and I want to keep that one if I can not get a good price use transmission, right now my money is very tight. I am selling the 03 base, BTW to get some money, but in the mean time if is possible to do the swap from one car to the other, I will do it.

So, you want to install the tip into the spyder? Please just give it to me and take my tip!
|
They both tip
|
Is it possible? Sure. Cost-effective? Certainly not.
Since the '04 is a Tip, also add in an entire shifter assembly, pedal assembly, hydraulic lines for clutch, gauge cluster (if it is to be done "correct", if not then at least coding)... may be easier and less costly to sell the '04 and get an '04 with a manual instead. |
I would never attempt this on a Boxster unless I got the exact year trans or engine.

I think that I posted the wrong info: the 04 Boxster S(SPYDER) has the tip(automatic transmission)damage, is not going on reverse. So I have an 03 Boxster Base with a tip transmission too, they are both automatic. So the question is: since both transmissions are automatic, could I transfer the transmission from the 03 to the 04? I don`t know if is clear what I want to do also I own both cars,
Thanks everybody for all the replies, hope that my question is more clear now. |

Can they be swapped? Yes. 99.996% sure of that. It's in the details that I get a bit guessey. You have all of both, so it should just be a matter of figuring out what parts must be swapped or kept. My catalog shows the transmission through 2003, so there's a chance they completely changed it for 2004 and I am clueless. Otherwise: The 2.7L version of the tip is ZF part number: 1060 030 050 The 3.2L version is: 1060 030 030. A smart person could examine this: https://www.zf.com/global/media/zf_media/document/int_print_catalogs_documents/usa_4/5hp19flporsche.pdf and figure out the differences. I expect that the Axle flanges from the S model will need to be swapped into the base model. The TCU may need to be swapped to get the right shift points and possibly prevent some sensor errors (just a guess). Other than that I expect that most of the differences will be internal to the transmission, mostly the differential, and not critical. Externally they are pretty much the same - should mount right up without issue. My advice: First, verify the model of transmission you have. Download the linked PDF catalog and look for any key differences between the two and swap what you need between the two. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1486784999.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1486785037.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1486785058.jpg |
Thanks 78F350, now I have the facts and information to check if is possible and if not I just need to see if somebody has a tip tranny for the 04 boxster S, for a good price. Woody is offering one but he said that is from a 2000 S, so I need to call woody to confirm that will be ok or if you or somebody can confirm that is bolt on, because if not I just going to sell the 04 Spyder like that and keep that 03 that is not problem with it. I love the spyder, but money is a little tight for me right now.

Looking at PET, all S models 2000-2004 use the same Tiptronic transmission.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1486784999.jpg I guess that when it says 1996-1998, we should read that as 1997-1999, and on up through the years. |
Thanks Deserion, is good to know that there are few years options to buy it.
