A 2001 Carrera cab. Midnight blue w/ Savannah beige int. 6 spd, 25K mi, with a hard top. It has the woodgrain trim option but the owner wanted to go carbon fiber so he started stripping the veneer, got 1/2 way thru, and quit. The dealership he traded it in to didn't want to take the time to address it, so I picked it up. The big problem is he got about 1/2 way thru on every piece of wood. Not sure if I'll track down wood replacements, replace with beige & black parts, or sand & paint the existing parts. Should keep me busy for a bit. Looks like the exterior will polish up nice.

I'm having trouble decoding the VIN for options but the tag in the trunk has a bunch. Tried the decoder in past threads but it says the car is unavailable. :confused: Here's the VIN in case someone can decode it: WP0CA29911S650596

Congrats! Not sure how it looks in person but I actually think the bare wood looks really cool. Its becoming a popular finish on cars these days.

I would just get used black pieces to replace the wood ones. The only thing that would cost you is the steering wheel.

Did he sand through the veneer or just the clear? I'd think if you can get the wood looking nice, throw a coat of matte-finish poly on it and be good to go. :)

He broke chunks of it off. There's a rough texture left from the glue along with pieces of veneer that didn't come off.

Congrats! I'd just pull the pieces since you said he pulled out chunks of it in certain sections, buy used black plastic replacements, and then have em painted the same blue as the exterior. Done and done. Drive her in good health.

Sweet! Would make a nice stablemate to my Box in the same colors, but without the wood bits.

I think I would just replace with the black plastic parts, or maybe make the horseshoe and batwing silver to pick up the the accents in the shift and ebrake. Be sure to post updates for us.

I've tried to take several pics and none come out. The codes are light and don't show up well. I'd write them down but there's 6 rows of 5 codes per line. My old eyes don't see that well. Might try tomorrow in better light.

Great car. I really like the wood. It's the rare Porsche that has it. :)

a specialist might be able to restore it, or try eBay...costs will be probably the same.

I was wondering what the PO was thinking too, esp since this must have been an expensive option. However this morning while poking around on the affected parts, it seems the glue could be letting go in places. Nothing more ginky than a trim piece partially disconnected. Will see if Goo Gone will remove the old glue, then sand and have painted. Think I'll go with a replacement black horseshoe and center console surround.

That's my kind of deal (not knowing what you paid), but one where someone started working on it and gave up unfinished lowering the value of an otherwise beautiful low mileage car that can be brought back with capable hands. I'm jealous too as I have been looking for that shifter for my box.

Wow. Destroying a wood interior like that is jaw dropping. Each piece could have been removed and sold for big bucks to someone wanting to make their 996 nicer. Ugh!

Would this Remin kit work? Price seems reasonable if it would work. There seem to be similar things for sale on eBay too.

A friend has a 2000 Boxster S with all of that wood. He bought it as the second owner about 5 years ago when the original owner traded it in. It was an expensive option!

Your link isn't working for me. I've seen all the wood and carbon application kits on ebay, but don't want to go that route. Pretty much all the pieces have compound curves and that generally doesn't bode well with a decal. Think the effort to paint them will be better.

As far as price goes, I think I got it for a good price. I had originally contacted this dealership before New Year's to make an offer on a Speed Yellow Cayman S they've had for some time. Thought they might be ready to move it, but we couldn't come to an agreeable price. A cpl wks later he contacted me with this one. They didn't want to take the time to bring it back up to snuff, so he said to make him an offer. At the time I was more interested in a Boxster in Dallas, so I wasn't too interested. I tried to come up with a bid that wouldn't be too insulting but I didn't figure they'd accept. He called me back a half hr later and wanted me to bump my bid by $250. I didn't budge, so he took my offer. However, they have a stupid documentation fee of $300 so that got tacked on (I was aware of it beforehand). And since it was out east, it was too dangerous to fly out and drive it back, so spent another $1K on shipping.

As always, "Edd" needs to keep costs down in order to make a profit for the Wheeler Dealers.
