2001 Key question

I have a single key to my 2001 and for the first time I ran it through the wash. I opened it up and dried everything off and replaced the battery. It worked!

But that got me thinking. I only have the 1 key. I know that there is a little pill in the key that allows the car to start and run, but is there anything in the circuit board of the key itself that is tied to my car?

Another question is what would I have to do to get a 2nd key fully operational (with working buttons)?

The circuit board is tied to the alarm module.

For a second key, buy a new fob (w/ info tag) and blade, have dealer or indie shop cut & program to car.

Thanks. Do you know if I can use the "valet key" that I have and put it into a new keyhead like the keyhead availabe at various porsche parts stores?

Yes, you can. If you carefully cut away the plastic, there is a transponder pill in it and the blade has the the same cut profile that locks into the transmitter heads.
