Test drove a CaymanS today, also saw '07 Turbo!
I went for a checkup of my 986S today. I had to check out the clutch and also fix the passenger interior mirror (it snapped out).
A sales guy approached me asking me about my car, how do I like it, how much I pay a month and if I am interested in anything. Considering I've only had the 986S for about 5 months (and madly in love) he asked me if I have ever test driven a CaymanS. I said why not? Beatiful, fully loaded CaymanS (69k sticker price). I really liked the CaymanS. The way it rides, the way it looks and everything but I could not find the little X spot that justifies the higher cost over a fully loaded 987S (which includes the top down factor). The 3.4 liter impresses and feels faster but not as fast as the 3.2 in the 986S. Yes it would be awesome to get into one of those right now but I just got the 986S and I am more than happy with its performance and looks. Taking a turn on the way back at around 57mph made me say that I am good right now. ;) On a side note, I just saw the 07 turbos. Oh my god. Now thats a monster! Beatiful and I really cant believe the way it will drive. I wish I had my camera phone to grab a picture or two ... Anyway some more Porsche fun for the day! p.s It is yet again confirmed for MY07 that BoxsterS will get the 295hp. |
yeah but the CaymanS was ALLOT stiffer right?
p.s. those new Turbos are hideous to look at. The 2000-2004 Turbos can now be had in the 60K's. A true exotic and liveable daily driver for less than the price of fully loaded CaymanS or 07 Boxster? Guess you kow which I would choose. |

Are you sure you disengaged the hand-brake? It can be tricky on the 987/C7... |
I would expect the Cayman to be stiffer but the cars to have close performance.

aBsOlUt,
I went to Hendrick Porsche on Saturday to order a part and saw the black 997 Turbo hidden in the detail bay. It is indeed stunning.... ddb |

Incidentally my friend who went from a BoxsterS to a GT3 said the 986 and the CaymanS were two completely different cars. I'm dying to find out missed a big chance to Autocross one of two Caymans at recent PCA event. I passed on a $50 per lap offering as well, there was one no show for his lap. Would you have done it? :D $50 is $50!
well the CaymanS already lapped n-ring quicker than the standard 997 Carrera. Maybe the Boxster with CaymanS engine might come close but the rigidity advantage definitely puts the CaymanS quicker than the Carerra. The non-S Cayman has a 2.7 engine (on par with a non-S Boxster in power) quiet a step down with 50 less horses. I guess the non-s Cayman will be snapped up by tuners looking to drop the big ole 3.8 or Turbo/SC power in there, rip out the interior..tasty. p.s. ghostrider, what other high end sports cars does Hendrick sell down there? |
on another note, i just read in either excellence or panorama (can't remember which) that porsche had applied for a patent on a mid engine 8 cylinder car. the rumor is that competition from the ferraris in the gt class may prompt porsche to abandon the rear engine 911's in favor of a mid engine (read cayman) layout with eight cylinders.
further, it may be a V-8 (not flat). apparently, flat eights are plagued by secondary harmonic issues that are really only resolved by using a flat crank (at a power loss). maybe a small wide-angle derivative of the cayenne? time will tell. |
ha!
no backseat = significantly less porsche sales! Until they figure out how to get a back seat in the CaymanS nobody's wifey is going for it. The average 911 owner has kids even if he never sticks them in the car it has to be possible for wifey not to put the 911 down as 100% 'his toy' like Lotus Elise |
ddb,
Yes! That is exactly where I spotted the new Turbo. Again, stunning! Where are you are around Charlotte? I live near UNCC, which I attend, but I am done about June 28th and I am going to start work... perfectlap, While I have not test-driven a 987S the CaymanS did feel very rigid. Sometimes the coupe factor is what makes me buy this car as I've had a convertible (Z4 for 3 years and now the 986S) all my driving life. Either way currently I am in love with the 986S and will keep it for more than a year. Also, Hendrick had a CarreraGT down there, I found out it got sold to a doctor not even from NC but from another state. It has a couple of used Turbos ('02 and '03) relatively low in milage. |
