new old school wheels
just ordered these 18" Fuch's style wheels for my 986 S. The car is black and slightly lowered on H&R springs - unfortunately, the car is in storage until spring :(

Tirerack's online pic of car with wheels is too big to post... so here is a link with their version of the 986 in black with these wheels ...

I am not a fan of aftermarket wheels on our cars. It is a personal taste thing. But... those look very good. I look forward to seeing them mounted on your car in the spring!

Like Chuck, I prefer stock wheels, and I was skeptical until I followed your link and saw them on the car. I really like the look on the website, and like Chuck, I'm looking forward to seeing how they look in real life.

The Fuch's style is classic and while they may not be perfect for every Porsche, they look surprisingly good on many models other than classic 911's.

I agree, I tend to be rather snobby re wheels, and until I saw the pic on the car, I wasn't sold. The 986 has classic enough lines with the top down that is seems to work with a Fuch's style wheel. The 19" version however was too modern looking for me on a 986.
I did a quick search for feedback on the Starke brand and Rennlist comments seemed positive. We shall see once I see them live :) |
The only thing I don't like is the center caps they come with look a little chintzy. Get something like these and they'll look great.

Your pic isn't working.
First thing my son said was he hated the center caps. From what I read on Rennlist, the stock Porsche center cap fits. I don't want to use the ones from my Turbo Twist 18s so I plan to buy a set of used or knockoffs in black or paint to match. |

m332is - interesting to see that your end price is actually lower than what they go for in the car market here locally (i.e. $325 each). The ones we have here (identical to yours) are made in Ningbo however, very close to Shanghai. Might be the reason for the over-pricing ;)
Looking forward seeing the results. Thumbs up |
Subscribed. I've been waiting to see these wheels on a 986 for a while now.

Here you can take a look at the OEM prices: OTTO FUCHS Felgen: Wheel Selection
The OEM wheels are forged wheels. Regards, Markus |

Well my opinion is prejudiced, concerning any kind of FUCHS designs (which i like, of course).
These look pretty good...and if Otto Fuchs wouldn't offer any new ones, I am sure I would have gone with aftermarket ones like those. I've seen a Boxster trying to fit old 16" (?) Fuchs wheels, but that looked like crap. And yes the OEM Fuchs are PREMIUM priced, no doubt, and therefor will be a rare sight on a Boxster. I was just crazy enough and could not say no...:D Only thing which really strikes me: The OEM FUCHS seem to be really light weight wheels compared to aftermarket ones...that might be MAYBE another reason to justify that price, or ahem...pay that price...lol. |

26 and 29 lbs (front/rear respectively) for the rim weight. Ouch. If I were replacing rims on my Boxster again, it would be for lighter unsprung weight, not more weight on every corner.
I bought aftermarket 18 inch Carrera Lights (Italian production) with the same widths. It makes my car look much newer and much better in my opinion (pictured below), HOWEVER...the car is noticeably sluggish off the line due to the additional weight. I'm betting their weight is similar to what is pictured above. (I'm too scared to weigh them to see just how much heavier they are compared to the factory 17 turbo twist type of wheel the car came with, which I use for the track.) This is the right direction in which to go with aftermarket wheels: https://www.tirerack.com/wheels/WheelCloseUpServlet?target=runWheelSearch&initialP artNumber=W0183400253B&wheelMake=O.Z.&wheelModel=A lleggerita%20HLT&wheelFinish=Black%20Painted&showR ear=yes&selectedRear=W0183600253B&autoMake=Porsche &autoModel=Boxster+S&autoYear=2001&autoModClar=&vi sLoc=1 |
Tirerack does sell wheels for the Boxster that are lighter than stock (e.g. OZ alleggerita), at 17 lbs a wheel or so for 18" wheels. Mine are 3 piece forged but still are like 26 lbs IIRC.

Mind you, I have a set of forged ultralight and they resonate like a crystal vase when I pinched them with my finger nail. Read I CAN'T go on roads that I am not familiar with at the risk of busting/exploding one or more of my wheels. You can also read this as "not fun at all". Many here have experienced it, heard & seen it, not taboo. Compromises are hard decisions sometimes. Waste of money is some cases :/ |
Let's see, my OEM FUCHS are:
Front 8J x 18, ET52 8.20 kg (x2.2) = 18,04 lbs Rear 10J x 18, ET65 8.80 kg (x2.2) = 19,36 lbs Is that still "light weight" for 18inch? |
