Oh God an Oil Change post

I finally got around to changing the Royal Purple in my S with 5K on the oil. I drained it and put in a new WIX filter and filled her up with DT-40. The DT-40 seemed much thinner in viscosity than the Royal Purple....much lighter in color. No problems and I do not what to be one of those guys that thinks everything is better........but the car did sound smoother and quieter running the DT-40 on the way home. My magnetic filter housing did nothing at all....a waste of time. I will post some pics later

The magnet gave you some reassurance. So good.

Magnets

Thanks for posting your results. Not surprised you didn't catch anything with your magnets but your efforts were not wasted. Again, these particles would be really fine and if you didn't have a lot of them not really visible. Nice to know you have a healthy engine.

Here is how things looked

I'm not familiar with DT40, but a really good synthetic definitely quiets down an engine. You'll find a 0-40 oil will quiet it down some more. Take care.

I think your magnets are working just fine. If there's nothing to find, that's a great result, not the fault of the mags!!!

That sounds like a good report!

Will run quieter with new oil versus old oil about every time.

Kind of like how new tires feel so much better than the old ones just removed.

I've been mildly looking into switching to Swepco oils. After one of the local Dealers approached me as I was referred to him by other Porsche locals. I've never hear of the oils but I'm reading some good stuff. And currently cheaper than Mobile 1. I recently changed to high mileage 15/40 mobile 1, I have horrible oil pressure I'm assuming due to very noisy lifters. It's embarrassing. And some baseball card/wheel spoke sound if I coast in gear. Would never have thought soo many engine noise would come from a Porsche. Never heard soo many noises from my high hp highly beat on Evo, but a daily driven Porsche. :ah:

I was going to say, why would you think the magnetic filter is a waste of time? If you've got a clean magnet then you know there's no metal shavings. That's very good news, certainly not a waste of time.

Were you hoping for metal shavings??

I think you just did not see what it is doing. Because you are using a black plastic housing, you probably could not see (or subsequently remove) the fine black metal grit the magnets trapped, simply because they look just like the housing itself:

We see small amounts of this on every car running the magnets at every oil change.

Actually I have two

I keep one meticulously clean for my next oil change, I will clean the one that came off and make it ready for my spring oil change
