Battery Malfunction
 

Hello

I disconnected the battery from the car for a few weeks and when I reconnected it and put the key in the ignition and turned it on I could hear it computing and then I noticed it added an extra 4000 KMs to my total.

Is there anyway I can turn it back?

No you can't. It should not have done that. The mileage is stored in the dme. Don't know why it would randomly add mileage.

You heard it computing? Can you explain in more detail?

I could hear little tiks and tacs coming from the dashboard as the on board computer works everything out.

I agree, something is fishy here, there is no way it would just add a random amount. Either someone was driving the car while the OP was unaware of it or he is just trying to find out how to turn the mileage back, sorry to be so suspicious but that is just not plausible.

I had a very unusual odometer malfunction, where after disconnecting the battery and reconnecting the odometer reset back to zero miles, zero everything. However, by disconnecting/reconnecting again it went back to normal. I would try disconnecting the battery again, after that I would check the instrument cluster connectors are seated correctly.

If I recall correctly, the odometer is stored in the instrument cluster, and nothing can roll back the mileage not even a Porsche dealer once you pass, I think its 100 miles on the odometer. If the car did actually add miles there is no way to get rid of them. There is no computer in the dash, it is under the seat. What you probably heard was the AC recalibrating itself, there are flaps to redirect the airflow in the dash that will make some noise. The car won't just add a random number to the odometer, perhaps someone has been joyriding?

The DME (aka ECU, aka engine computer) is in the rear trunk.

The immobilizer (aka car alarm) is under the driver seat.

The mileage readout can easy be reset with the right equipment. When I installed a 996 cluster I sent it off to a company in Colorado (ODO-PRO.COM - Odo-Pro.com - The Digital Odometer Professionals) to have the mileage readout changed to match the Boxster's. I cannot speak to other years, but the 2001 Boxster S mileage is stored in the cluster and only the cluster. The hours the engine has run are stored in the DME, but not the mileage.

I have read other issues with digital odometers malfunctioning. The OP very likely suffered some software malfunction. I like rick3000's idea of disconnecing and then reconnecting the battery in an attempt to get the correct mileage back.

Wrong. Mileage errors on the cluster are not uncommon and More is not trying to do anything "fishy". :rolleyes:




And the OBC (on board computer) is in the cluster. The mileage is stored there (and possibly the ECU and immobilizer).

Try disconnecting the cluster for a few minutes and see if that helps.
