Crankshaft pulley bolt thread gone

I have a (big) issue.

As you can see in the picture the thread on the bolt for the crankshaft pulley is gone (top of the bolt). If you look at the bolt, what would this mean for the thread in the crankshaft? Is it gone as well or is the material from the bolt softer and left in the crankshaft?

Any ideas how to get a new bolt fitted in the crankshaft?

Many thanks for your ideas.

Explain what you were doing when you noticed this? Did you install the bolt without the washer?

My guess is that the threads may be ok. You could try a thread chaser

I'd clean and lubricate the hole. Then use a thread chaser or tap (I'll let the experts argue over which tool is best for this application) to clean up the threads. Clean and lubricate again. Then use a new bolt and see if it will thread into the hole. If so, then clean again to remove lubricant, re-install, and torque.

I was very stupid and forgot the wrench was still on the bolt. I forgot it was there and fired up the car. The bolt came loose to the point where it could not get further. Due the speed the thread of the bolt is gone...

This would mean the thread of the crankshaft is only damaged at the beginning of the shaft.

Jvdv, hopefully the treads on the bolt are softer than the treads on the crank and you will be able to clean them with a tap

Issue is solved. I used a milling machine which was attached with a magnet to the engine. Couple of threads milled away and the bolt goes in OK.

It's called a magnetic drill.
