'02 in shop for IMSB etc

Brought the boxster into indie shop yesterday. Had Scheduled ims bearing (LN ) replacement. Pouring rain drinking there thinking do I really need to do this ?
Answered your own question - yes! I'm not the relaxed type :p

Got a call today , shop giving an update that the clutch was all but gone pressure plate almost at the rivets. I guess 53k it's not unusual even after reading how some guys get 100k ?
I held my breath in hopes the fly wheel was ok, not so lucky it was pretty bad.
Well you can guess this got expensive in a hurry. I figured the clutch should be done even if it was half way worn, but flywheel was a hit
Tonight as I'm going over things it was a good move to drop tranny the clutch would have gone soon and at that time all work would have been performed anyway
Pretty sure shop said the original factory ims was in good shape.

Since you needed a clutch as it turns out, the peace of mind from the LN IMSB is an added benefit, although it's a hurt on your wallet. Ask the shop to give you your old IMSB and put it on your desk or workbench. How long a clutch lasts depends on the drivers and how the car is driven. My neighbor needed a new clutch on his Boxster S in the low 20k mile range, an example of really bad clutch use!

IMSB Desk Weight

I think that's a great idea.

Good luck, get it all done and then get it back and drive it. What LN are you going with the IMS Solution?

Funny thing is the clutch felt real good ..

I did the LN pro , '02 is a single row so the pro is a double row ceramic ball bearings that fits in the single rows place. Seems like a solid upgrade
Didn't want to do the oil fed bearing too much xtra stuff going on. Need to file a channel for oil line & other mods. If it was a track car maybe but it's not

IIRC, there is something about LN wanting the old IMSB if you want a warranty
I could be wrong

Yes the shop mentioned sending old bearing back

Boxtaboy 11-30-2016 06:59 PM

I'm not saying your shop did the same, but my dealer told me at 40k that my clutch was on its way out. That was years ago. Clutch didn't slip and felt fine to me, so I didnt change it. I'm at 72k now and clutch still good. Glad you're gonna have peace of mind now.

Sleep well & enjoy your Boxster.

53k is pretty low. Did they send you pictures? I'd be curious to see it.

I went to shop today ,brought them manual tranny fluid .
Saw the old parts. Imsb looked perfect! , the flywheel had a lot of ply about an inch with no spring back . Pressure plate had some life left rivets were not all at same depths so there were some very close to wear surface

Honestly it could be parts from another car guess you have to trust someone
Unless I was there to see parts coming out who knows

Asked them to check a reoccurring cel. It was an O2 sensor - told them to change it
Hate seeing the darn cel light

You have to trust your Indy.

You trusted him enough to go there so don't worry you're being taken advantage of.
It looks like you want piece of mind and a baseline of critical components. Nothing wrong with that.

Get your car back, relax and enjoy.

Red machine is back on the road , feels nice :)

took it for a Sunday drive - all smiles . Was going to wash her but decided to leave a little road dirt on, won't think twice next time I feel like a ride

Good deal!
We read so much gloom and doom on these cars. Some justified, some just paranoid.

Unfortunately, there's not thread for "My car ran great again today!"
