What's this noise?

I get this noise (sounds like a vacuum cleaner) when starting from cold. It goes off after about 20 seconds. No smoke and no cel.
Any ideas?

Your SAI pump is crapping out.
You can take these apart and lube the bearings. They dry out and make noise a while before they die.

Depends on how loud it is. Its normal to hear a faint whine.

Watching the video, it's abnormally loud. If he's in the U.K., is there even an SAI?

That's definitely bad/dry bushing on the secondary air pump. Easy fix and cheap if you take it apart and grease them before they burn up the motor.

Thanks for the quick replies.
I guess I have a project for tomorrow! It looks fairly easy to remove!
Are there any write-ups for this and what type of grease is required?

Many VAG products use the same SAI pump. Here's a DIY I found where an Audi owner gutted his and nursed it back to life.

Or check with Woody... he may be able to fix you up with a decent used one.
