Mercedes-Benz Pickup Truck - Can Porsche be Far Behind?

MB just announced a pickup truck. Will Porsche follow suit?

My guess is it would not be difficult for Porsche to do using the Cayenne platform. Being a die hard Porsche sport car fan I shudder at the idea but if it makes business I' don't see why not.

What I want to see is a "bro" Mercedes truck with some smokestacks if a diesel version is offered.

I likes. I am a big fan of pick-up trucks and this one look like a rear truck with a real bed. Porsche doesn't have a lineage with offroad like Mercedes and the GWagon.

Oh good lord...lets hope not. :(

Mercedes has a long history of trucks and SUV's. VW has had 2 pickups that I can recall, one based on the microbus, and another based on the Rabbit. Cadillac and Lincoln have both had pickups. If Porsche thinks it makes financial sense, I'm sure they will.

With a new GMC Denali coming in north of $80,000 I can't see why they wouldn't want in.

rexcramer 10-27-2016 06:35 PM

Look at the sales figures. Porsche is an SUV company that dabbles in sports cars. If it wasn't for the new Macan, there year over year sales would be down in the USA. If they think they can sell it, and make a buck, a truck can't be far off. Bentley has an SUV scheduled for 2017.

Next thing you know, human sacrifice, dogs and cats will be living together, mass hysteria.

I'd be more impressed with the MB truck if it wasn't apparent of the Nissan it's based on. Maybe a G-Wagen would be more slick. But from what rumors I've been reading I'm not so sure that's coming to North America.

That said, not expecting Porsche to go truck. If they did I'd wager it would be based on the Volkswagen Amarok.

Mercedes already has made my favorite pickup:

When I lived in Germany in the early 80's there were no pickups to be seen. Everyone had trailers they pulled behind their cars. It would be interesting to see if that market has changed. Here in the US pickups and SUV's rule, and have for many years.

I'm holding out for the Porsche El Camino.

All business up front and party time in the back

That hasn't changed much but what has changed is the perliferation of CUV's.

The Panamera Sport Turismo (aka Station Wagon) is already on tap for 2018.

Wonder if it has a rear facing 3rd row? :)

In fact, Mercedes invented the truck ... as they did the car and the motorcycle.

You can get a big trailer and make an 18-wheeler with a Mercedes tractor. Then there's the Unimog.

The pickup IMHO compliments the Sprinter and Metris vans more so than the SUVs and doubt Porsche is entering the commercial market.

VW owns MAN, which is a pretty comprehensive big truck line, and there are lots of VW-labeled commercial vehicles, including at one time a rebadged Sprinter. They have a pickup in South America.

BIGJake111 10-31-2016 04:08 AM

Mercedes only has a light duty truck because Renault/Nissan is in partnership.

(Remember the g class and unimog have been around for a long time and the brand is great at all things off road.)

Mercedes gave Infiniti the GLA so that Infiniti can maybe sorta kinda become a luxury brand and I'm assuming the return of the deal is the frontier for a Mercedes truck.

Porsche won't have a truck because they don't have a platform to make it on other than the amorak which can't sell in America, while Mercedes is willing to produce a car they can't offer here, Porsche wouldn't bother with a model they can't offer here.

I saw this on campus here in clemson just last week! I came out of one of the academic buildings and this was in the lot and I just out loud said "what the heck, it's a unimog," and gravitated towards it.

Who would ever put a load of dirt or rocks in the bed of a Porsche pickup truck?

I would in a flash.

Particularly if doing so would keep my Mrs. from spilling bags of soil, rocks, mulch, potted plants, etc. in her Macan's cashmere interior...

:)
